The Pirarucu or Arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish in the Amazon. For many years I wanted to visit the Mamiraua Reserve to fish for these legendary monsters. Mamiraua is well known for having the greatest concentration of these fish in the Amazon basin. I was frustrated because the reserve did not allow sport fishing.

This year, I was very exited to find out that the Mamiraua Reserve was going to allow fly fishing for the first time. My friend Pat Ford and I were among the first anglers to sign up for a trip to this legendary place. Soon four other friends agreed to join us on this adventure.

Mamiraua had allowed the local inhabitants of the region to harvest a number of Pirarucu every year in order to obtain income for the villages in the area. Now the anglers that go fishing there pay an additional fee to the reserve that gets distributed among the villagers and in return the villagers do not harvest any fish. In this way, allowing catch and release fishing became a win-win for everyone concerned.

The villagers get income, the anglers get to fish for these legendary fish and the fish are not harvested for food or income. Hopefully this type of sustainable development of resources will catch on in other parts of the world.

Our trip was a great success even though the fishing was very difficult. In the end, we learned a lot about the habits of these legendary river monsters.

El Pirarucú o Arapaima es uno de los mayores peces de agua dulce en el Amazonas. Durante muchos años quise visitar la reserva de Mamiraua para pescar estos legendarios monstruos. Mamiraua es bien conocida por tener la mayor concentración de estos peces en la cuenca del Amazonas. Estuve frustrado, porque la directiva de la reserva no permitía la pesca deportiva.

Este año, me sentí muy emocionado al descubrir que la Reserva Mamiraua iba a permitir la pesca con mosca por primera vez. Mi amigo Pat Ford y yo estuvimos entre los primeros pescadores en inscribirse para un viaje a este legendario lugar. Pronto otros cuatro amigos accedieron a unirse a nosotros en esta aventura.

Mamiraua había permitido a los habitantes locales de la región matar una serie de Pirarucú cada año con el fin de obtener ingresos para los pueblos de la zona. Ahora los Pescadores deportivos que van a pescar allí pagan una tarifa adicional a la reserva que se distribuye entre los aldeanos que han cambiado su forma de pensar al no matar ningún pescado. De esta manera, se permite la pesca de capturar y liberar los peces, razón por la cual todos los interesados han salido ganando.

Los aldeanos obtienen ingresos, mientras que los pescadores pescan estos legendarios peces que no se sacrifican para la alimentación o los ingresos y son liberados vivos.

Esperemos que este tipo de desarrollo sostenible de recursos sea imitado en otras partes del mundo.

Nuestro viaje fue un gran éxito, aunque la pesca se realizó con dificultad. Al final, aprendimos mucho sobre los hábitos de estos legendarios monstruos del río.
